The most annoying component of a broken fence is a gate that does not work properly. Gates wage a lifelong battle with gravity. Gravity always wins in the end. A tune up can double the life of a gate and eliminate the dreaded opening and closing of the gate every time you enter/exit the yard. Gate tune ups are usually performed when one or more of the following exist:
1. The gate runs into the fence as opposed to closing inside the fence.
2. The gate has to be lifted onto the latch.
3. The gate drags on the ground.
4. The gate's hinges are pulling out of the fence, or the gate itself.
5. The gate is not braced, or braced incorrectly.
A gate tune up consists of resetting the gate latch, trimming the gate to fit inside its opening, trimming the bottom of the gate so it doesn't rub on the ground. Depending on the hinge type, the gate may be raised or lowered to run properly in its existing situation. The gate is properly tuned when it can be shut with one finger!
The old gate is unbolted or cut from the existing fence and thrown away. A new gate is purchased and installed in its place. This usually requires either welding the new gate in place or bolting it in place............ depends on the hinge type. If your gate is of a style that cannot be purchased off the shelf a new matching gate can be custom fabricated and installed. The new gate is then sealed and painted gloss, semi gloss or flat black depending on the color condition of the existing fence.
